Gallery – Butter and Cheese dishes

Below you will find a selection of butter and/or cheese dishes. If the individual photo is labeled as a butter dish, you may be assured that a standard stick of butter will fit between the plate and lid. If the description includes “short”, then shrinkage during firing was greater than anticipated – use a tablespoon of butter right away! All vessels may be used as spread or cheese dishes as all my pottery is food safe (and may be used in the microwave as needed).

French butter keepers (or butter bells) are a new item for me. They are constructed as a two-piece set. Place softened SALTED butter in the top and then invert into the base which should contain about 1/2″ of freshwater. The water acts as a barrier between the butter and oxygen in the air that could make your butter rancid. If you use butter as often as I do, you may not need to use water but this is a compact and clean method of butter storage for your table/counter that will keep your butter at room temperature and easy to spread. Be sure to use SALTED butter in your butter bell! Unsalted butter MUST BE REFRIGERATED for freshness!
